Comic Con San Diego 2013 (Part 1) Steampunk

Yes, this was the first Comic Con I have ever attended and it was pure awesome, confusing, fascinating and annoying all jam-packed in one overstuffed, superhero cape-wrapped Skylab burrito.

I had a four day professional pass (plus Preview Night) but I figured that I might not be able to stomach that much Comic Con (and I didn’t, hence family visits to Sea World and The San Diego Zoo Safari Park, an exhibit I would highly recommend.)

I attended the convention guerrilla-style, a completely unknown author with a new book. My publisher was not present (47North will be at Comic Con NY) and I didn’t have a booth or a table. I understood this, but I wanted to go to Comic Con for the first-timer experience, as a fanboy, and for the opportunity to introduce myself to some of the steampunk organizations in the southern California area. I wanted to get my book into the hands of steampunks, so I wandered the floor with a backpack full of books and handed them out to the properly attired attendees.

I attended several great panels, the best being The Witty Women of Steampunk, which included Jaymee Goh (Silver Goggles), Anina Bennett (Boilerplate) and Robin Blackburn (The League of S.T.E.A.M.) I was able to speak briefly with these three women and they were attentive and kind.
